Elizabethtown Library, Lancaster County

This project involved shoe-horning a new two-story library into Main Street following demolition of a two-story bank. Tight dimensional control was required to underpin the adjacent properties and to accommodate an adversarial neighbor. The steel-framed library included a silo-shaped reading room and an entry that blended into the existing streetscape. This $2.8 million building was built in 2000 by High Construction under the guidance of architect Carol Hickey.

Lebanon County Courthouse,
Lebanon, PA

Designed by Beers & Hoffman and built by Arthur Funk & Sons, this four-story addition added a new courtroom, office space and prisoner-processing space to the existing facility. The façade had to match the existing buff-colored brick, and the spaces had to blend with the existing functions. Foundations on sinkhole-prone limestone included steel piles driven to refusal and reinforced concrete pile caps. The 21,000 square-foot addition, built at a cost of $2.7 million, was occupied in 1999.

Susquehanna Association for the Blind
and Vision-Impaired, Lancaster, PA

Located on Queen Street several blocks north of Penn Square, this 2001 project included two distinct parts: a 21,000 square-foot, three-story office addition and renovations to the existing "factory." The attractive design by Stuart + LeFevre Architects blended the new brick façade into the existing building while establishing a new modern feel. Foundations had to account for the sloping site, the adjoining buildings and the adjoining main urban street, while new floors had to match existing spaces. Renovations included analysis of and upgrading the heavy timber-framed factory. The project cost was approximately $4.5 million.
